Banner exchange networks, also known as banner swap networks, are a good way to increase traffic to your site for free.

How banner exchange networks work

The principle is simple, you show banners on your site, and in return, your banners are shown on other sites on the banner exchange network.

Click through rates on banners are usually quite low. 1 in 200 is excellent but 1 in 2000 is more realistic on many banner exchange networks.

The most important thing to get right is the targeting of your banners ie. who is seeing them. Unfortunately banner exchange networks don't publicise the other sites on their network so there's no way of knowing where your banners are shown.

There are many niche individual banner exchange sites specialising in their own area of expertise - for example, mystarship.com is a sci-fi site that offer a banner exchange with other sci-fi sites.
